The game stops for a few seconds. Before the sporting gesture has found its own following, the screen changes masters: a product, an offer, a higher voice. Discontinuation is considered an available container. For those who look, however, that time was already filled with waiting, tension and storytelling.
Advertising supports a part of the media economically and can have creative qualities. The problem arises when its effectiveness is measured only by its ability to impose itself. Being seen is not the same as being heard, and reaching out to a person when he cannot easily escape does not, on his own, build a relationship.
The spectator's time has a form
A sporting event is not just a sequence of sellable images. It has a rhythm of actions, pauses, comments, memory of the previous gesture. Even a seemingly empty interruption belongs to that experience. We can discuss this without claiming that any commercial space is illegitimate or that a specific broadcaster has violated a rule.
The European Audiovisual Media Services Directive distinguishes advertising and editorial content. In Article 20(1), it requests that the integrity of the programmes be respected by considering natural breaks, duration, nature of the programme and rights of the holders. The consolidated text also admits isolated spots in sporting events. Not every subjective nuisance therefore coincides with a legal violation. Consolidated Directive 2010/13/EU.
The integrity criterion is also culturally interesting beyond legal assessment. It invites us to observe the content as a whole: a game, a movie or an inquiry have a sense that it can be weakened by insertions designed without listening to the rhythm.
Being recognizable means taking responsibility
The IAP Commercial Communication Self-Discipline Code requires, in Article 7, that the promotional message be recognizable and distinct from other content. Article 8 addresses the exploitation of superstition, credulity and fear. It is a system of self-discipline with its own scope of membership, not the complete description of all applicable laws. IAP Code.
These principles shift speech from encumbrance to loyalty. We can accept an openly commercial message and feel manipulated by content that presents itself as disinterested information. We can remember a campaign without desiring the product, or buy something and retain an impression of invasion.
Quality therefore does not coincide with a formula capable of guaranteeing results. It requires attention to context, language, promise and recipient. If a communication evokes well-being, awareness or spirituality, this commitment becomes even more concrete: words that touch deep needs should not function as mere multipliers of purchasing pressure.
From the attention captured to the attention given
A different communication can begin with a renunciation of automatism: not every break must be filled, not every emotion must become an opportunity for sale. Silence is not necessarily a waste of space. It can preserve the value of experience that also makes the economic support of the medium possible.
For those who design a message, the question changes: what contribution do we offer to those who are watching? Useful information, an interesting form of expression, a relevant service are real possibilities. They remain to be verified with people, without assuming that a declared intention suffices to make them so.
Even the public can exercise a more precise look. Recognizing the commercial purpose, distinguishing sponsors and editors, comparing a promise with what is actually offered gives room for choice. It does not require living in a permanent state of suspicion.
The shared time of a game reminds us of a broader media responsibility. Attention is a condition of the relationship, before it becomes an economic measure. A conscious communication is also judged by the ability to enter into that relationship without consuming it entirely.
