A ready-made answer

Someone utters a phrase we know. Before he is finished we have prepared the objection, recognized the intention, placed the person in his part. Sometimes we only notice after we have responded to a memory. The present meeting was still going on; we had already finished the scene.

It is from a difficulty so close that one can enter Gurdjieff's quest. Awakening is about being able to participate with greater presence in what we do. Automatism becomes an observable question: what happened between listening and answering? What feeling, fear, or expectation did the tone decide?

The Gurdjieff Foundation in New York presents its work as a study of itself in the conditions of ordinary life, through attention, shared experience, writings, music and movements. Daily existence offers the material of research. Foundation presentation.

This orientation subtracts inner work from a promise of exceptionality. A person can talk about conscience and continue not to listen to those in front of them. Instead, he can discover something important while recognizing a small impatience, without building a special identity around the discovery.

The observer is not out of the picture

In the collection Views from the Real World, a conversation dated March 13, 1924, insists on the difficulty of self-observation. The attempt also serves to recognize how fragile our claim to already have stable attention is. Exercise does not immediately guarantee the result we imagine. Conversation text.

This difficulty changes the sense of practice. If we turn observation into a court of law, every reaction becomes a fault. If we turn it into a prize, we seek above all confirmation that we are advanced. In both cases a conclusion precedes the experience.

An alternative is to accurately describe an episode. Did we raise our voices? Was the body tense? Were we interrupting? What did we think we should defend? These are questions that return details, instead of distributing qualifications as conscious and unaware.

Relationships with others can also offer feedback. The person we interrupted might remember a different moment than the one we remember. Listening to its version prevents the inner search from becoming a closed room, where the observer certifies his own lucidity.

Interrupt a script without looking for the show

In the vocabulary of awakening comes the idea of a shock capable of interrupting a continuity. Read in everyday life, the useful question is what gesture makes a habit visible. You don't need to convert this image into looking for pain or dangerous situations.

A pause before replying can show how urgent it was to win the discussion. Rereading one's own sentence can make one feel an aggressiveness that we didn't understand. Asking for clarification instead of attributing an intention changes the course of the meeting and makes the interpretation controllable.

They are simple possibilities, which do not replace the complexity of a tradition or claim to sum up its method. However, they have a concrete value: change is seen in the quality of the action and the relationship it leaves, as well as in the story we make of ourselves.

Presence does not coincide with the permanent control of every thought. Such an ideal would risk producing more tension. It can begin by recognizing a moment when we were absent and returning to what is happening.

Gurdjieff's question then remains inconvenient and fertile. While we claim to know who we are, who is listening? The answer can take shape in the next meeting, even before in a definition.
