The entry becomes a document

A conversation contains hesitations, shootings, incomplete sentences. Transcription turns them into lines that we can search, quote, sort. This passage is valuable: it makes accessible a material that would otherwise require hours of listening. However, it introduces a distance between the event and its written representation.

A misrecognized proper name is enough to deflect a search. A book title can become a generic expression; a question phrase can lose the question. Punctuation, added to help the reader, already participates in the interpretation of what has been uttered.

The official documentation of Whisper, a speech recognition system, recognizes that the model can produce text that is absent in audio. It also reports differences in accuracy between speakers' languages, accents, and conditions. These are limits made explicit by developers in the template tab.

The implication concerns the relationship with the document. An accurate transcription remains a processing of the recording; a sliding transcription may require checks right in the steps that seem most surprising. The appearance of completeness does not allow one to know how the text was obtained.

A repeated sentence does not become a confirmation

The digital archive can multiply the same content. A recording produces a transcript, then a summary, then thematic notes. If later those files are treated as independent testimonials, a single statement seems supported by many sources. The amount of documents hides their kinship.

A generative system can add an additional step. In the profile dedicated to generative artificial intelligence, NIST describes the production of erroneous content presented with confidence and recalls the need to verify sources and quotations. The risk is examined in institutional document of 2024.

For a reader, the decisive question becomes: is this link traceable? A precise reference allows you to open a work, read a passage and see if it really supports the conclusion. An authoritative name without title, page or context instead offers a feeling of solidity that is difficult to control.

Targeted control can start with the points that change the meaning of a speech: names, dates, denials, digits, and bibliographic references. Comparing them with the original allows you to correct before a passage is taken up in other texts.

The error is not just about automatic systems. Even a person can mentally complete a name or misremember a source. The availability of fast tools makes it even more useful to keep track of the steps, so that a fix can reach anything that depends on the wrong point.

Retain the chance to go back

The organization of an archive is part of the cognitive work. Originals, transcriptions and synthesis have different functions; connecting them allows them to be used together. Date, provenance, and review status help to understand what material we are consulting.

In its digitization strategy for public access, the U.S. National Archives includes metadata, quality control, and archival context. They also claim the preservation of digitized originals for this purpose. It is a institutional example of method, also useful beyond the scale of a large archive.

A well-groomed collection can keep an uncertain word visible, signal a gap, and preserve earlier versions. Localised doubt makes the rest more usable: the reader knows where to listen again, look for an edition or ask for a match.

Artificial intelligence can accelerate the discovery of connections and free up time to read them. Discernment begins when we can distinguish the suggested from the documented link. A shared memory becomes stronger if it also preserves the path through which it was built.
